Visitors’ experience of the Getty begins far below the museum itself, in the Fran and Ray Stark Sculpture Garden. The designers took a holistic approach to siting the sculpture collection, integrating architecture and landscape with the 28 works to create site-specific placement throughout the campus. From the sculpture garden, an electric tramcar shuttles patrons up the mountainside and through the oak grove to emerge at the museum. Since its opening, the Getty and its grounds have been entirely free and open to the public year-round, and many residents of the region have come to use the Getty landscape as a public park and meeting space.

Extended through March 12, 2022, Cairo Modern showcases works by Egyptian modernists from the 1920s to the 1970s, half a century of rich architectural production that complicate our present understanding of global modernism. The exhibition introduces audiences to key architects from the period, as well as examples of their works commissioned by the state and the city’s burgeoning bourgeoisie. Modernism in Cairo reflected the aspirations of the new classes that formed after Egypt’s 1919 Revolution who embraced the Modernist house or apartment as the materialization of new notions of class, identity, and modernity.
The class will explore various techniques to support the treehouse and create ladders, swings, furniture, and other fun details. By the end of this course, students will have created their very own model treehouse. Students investigate the history of housing and consider what’s in store for the future. This class will explore historic homes to see how people lived in the past, discover advancements in green architecture today, and speculate about how we might live in the future.

As the Pasadena Showcase House of Design enters its 59th year, it’s returning to a familiar setting.

Students will take inspiration and ideas from amazing skyscrapers in New York City and around the world as they design, draw, and build their own skyscrapers. New York City would be very different without the complex subway system that runs underneath its busy streets.
Students in this class will learn about the design strategies and techniques that help people live in unlikely places. They will imagine their own sites and use 3D design software to design shelters that enable people to survive and thrive in these extreme conditions.
